Little Things Add Up By Myles Dannhausen Jr.
I've been thinking a lot lately about the things government should and shouldn't get involved in. It's a natural byproduct of the heated, often misguided debate we're having about health insurance, and to a lesser extent health care, in this country right now. But I'm actually not as concerned about the big things, like the military, health care, and education.
Why don't those line items that are counted by the hundreds of billions worry me so much? At least those hot-button issues generate public debate and interest from citizens and oversight groups. Yes, the sausage-making is still ugly, but at least there are cameras on the process.

Half Marathon Registration Opens Nov. 1
|
Race capped for first time
Registration for the third annual Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k opens Nov. 1.
The race has been capped at 1,200 participants for the Half Marathon and 400
for the 5k after attracting over 1,000 registrants in 2009, nearly double the 2008 inaugural race.
Jenny Hadfield, coach and co-founder of Chicago Endurance Sports, brought a squadron of
her club's members to the race last year.
"The Door County Half
Marathon is a real treasure," Hadfield said. "The course winds through
picturesque Peninsula State Park and is closed to traffic, which makes for a
uniquely authentic journey from start to finish. The Chicago Endurance
Sports Team loved it so much, they're coming back in 2010 to run it again!"
The course,
certified by the United States Track and Field Federation, is closed to traffic
for the race and provides runners and fans with panoramic bluff-top vistas of
the peninsula shoreline. The closed course is a welcome relief to those weary
of overcrowded courses on busy city streets, and the scenery can't be beat.
To watch a video of the course and see interviews with 2009
participants, visit www.doorcountyhalfmarathon.com. For
registration information or questions contact Mary Knutson at 920.421.1519.

Rough Seas Photo By Paula Hedeen
High winds rattled the peninsula yesterday, and the Washington Island Ferry felt it too as it crossed Death's Door. Power was knocked out in Fish Creek for about four hours Monday evening, and trees and branches went down around the county.
